OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

The Department of Surgery took off immediately after the Teaching Hospital was established in April 2008, with Dr J. T Ige as the pioneer Head of the Department. There were only two consultants in the department (a general surgeon and a urologist), with four Medical Officers. Prof. K.S Oluwadiya took over as head of the department in February 2012, when he was appointed Head of the Department at Ekiti State University. Prof. J.O. Esho was the HOD between August 2013 and July 2018. Prof. J. D. Ogunlusi between 2018 and 2020 and, Dr M. B. Yusuf between 2020 and 2022.  Dr J. G. Olaogun became the HOD in August 2022 and handed over to Dr I. A. Kadiri, the current head of the department in August 2024.

  Theatre Sessions: There are two (2) operating theatres available to the Surgery Department for elective and emergency surgical operations.

1. Main theatre: This theatre has 3 well-equipped suites for operation by the various units

2. Accident and Emergency Theatre: Situated within the Accident and Emergency Complex and open for emergency surgeries

Each surgical unit has at least one operating session per week for elective cases.

The orthopaedic surgery unit has two operating sessions per week for elective cases. The theatre sessions for the various units are shown in the table below.

       Consultants’ Ward Round

A consultant teaching round is held at least once a week in each unit.

The resident doctors have daily ward rounds in various units.

DEPARTMENTAL ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The academic programs are designed for teaching resident doctors, House Officers, and students. Mondays and Wednesdays are dedicated to the main departmental academic activities.

Monday morning review (Post call):  cases managed during the weekend calls are presented and discussed under the supervision of consultants.

 

Surgery Grand Rounds: This takes place every Wednesday. The various units on a weekly rotational basis give an in-depth presentation of a surgical disease process and the unit also discusses local experience where applicable.

 

Resident/ House officers’ presentations: This program is held on Wednesdays. Topics on Surgical principles are allocated to resident doctors, which they present under the supervision of a pre-assigned consultant.

 

Morbidity and Mortality meetings: This is a surgical audit that is held every first Wednesday of the month to assess and learn from the management of different patients in the previous month. The aim is to improve patient management. These presentations are done by all the surgical units.

 

Surgico-Pathology Meetings: These meetings are held every two months between the surgical and anatomic pathology teams to review the histology of selected cases. The aim is to reconcile the clinical, operative, and histologic findings for learning purposes. The cases are pre-selected by representatives of the two departments.

 

Surgico-Radiology Meetings: This is also held every two months and involves the departments of surgery and radiology. Radiographs of patients are selected and sent to the radiologist for review. Patients’ operative findings and imaging reports are reconciled and discussed extensively.

 

Wards

1. Male Surgical ward has 23 beds for surgical patients with fixed bed screens. The ward has adequate cross ventilation and adequate professional staff. There are nurses’ stations and sisters’ rooms. It has a linen store, sluice room, toilets and shower rooms, and wash-hand basins within the ward.  All other accessories to make the ward function effectively are also available.

It has a linen store, sluice room, toilets and shower rooms, and wash-hand basins. All other accessories to make the ward function effectively are also available.

1. Paediatric Ward is shared with the Department of Paediatrics and has 27 beds/cots. Six beds/cots are dedicated to the surgery department. The ward has adequate cross ventilation and adequate professional staff. There are nurses’ stations and sisters’ rooms. It has a play point where children can play and all other accessories as seen in the other surgical wards.

Operating Theatre; the main theatre is situated away from the hospital’s general traffic and flow of patients and staff. The theatre is designed such that the operating rooms are free from unnecessary contamination. There are dirty areas, clean areas and sterile zones. Changing rooms are available for all categories of staff and students. The theatre currently has three functional operating suites. A five-bed recovery room is available for the care of patients following surgery with multi-parameter monitors, for immediate post-operative management.

 

A six-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with state-of-the-art facilities is available for critically ill patients who require intensive management. A section of the building is used for computerized tomography.

 

Accident and Emergency Ward; this is a facility designed for acutely ill or injured patients. It is easily accessible from the hospital’s main gate and has 39 beds partitioned into four zones. The Triage zone is for patients’ initial assessment and resuscitation; the red zone is for continued assessment, resuscitation, investigation and specialist evaluation; the yellow zone is for continued care, investigation and transfer to the ward; and the green zone is for patients that are to be discharged home from Accident and Emergency Ward. Each bed has a fixed screen. There is a minor procedure room, standard one-suite theatre, plaster room, seminar room, doctors’ room, nurses’ room and patients’ relations waiting area among other facilities.

 

Children Emergency Ward; is easily accessible and has fourteen beds/cots. There is a patient resuscitation and evaluation area. There are also doctors ‘and nurses’ rooms. The General Children's Outpatient unit is attached to the emergency ward.
