The Department of Paediatrics of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, started officially with the upgrade of the hospital to the status of a teaching hospital in 2008. In August 1st, 2012 it joined other departments in the hospital to co-host the college of medicine with the Ekiti State University beginning with three pioneer academic members of Staff (Dr Oluwayemi I.O, Dr Olatunya O.S, and Dr Ogundare E.O,). Currently, the department has six honorary permanent consultants, two locum consultants and many resident doctors.
Professor Oyelami O.A. from Obafemi Awolowo University had one year sabbatical leave with the department from 2014 to 2015 and was subsequently employed as adjunct professor of Paediatrics and locum honorary consultant paediatrician for the Department till date.
Dr Oluwayemi I.O. was the first acting Head of Department (HOD) after the hospital transited to a tertiary centre followed by Dr Ogundare from the year 2012 to 2015; then Dr Oluwayemi I.O. again from 2015 to 2017, The current HOD is Dr Olatunya O.S. He assumed the headship of the department in 2018 after completing his study abroad.
Activities of the Department of Paediatrics include:
1. Treatment and management of childhood illnesses and disorders
2. Teaching and training of medical Students
3. Training of resident doctors
4. Research in various fields of Paediatrics and child health
5. Education of the larger society on problems relating to child health
Dr Oladele Simeon Olatunya is the current Head of Department of Paediatrics, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. He is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Paediatrics, College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria. He also works as a consultant Paediatric haematologist at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (the clinical wing of the university). Dr Olatunya holds a Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) of the University of Ilorin, Ilorin Kwara State, Nigeria in year 2000. He later proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife Osun State, Nigeria, in December 2005 for his Postgraduate Programme (Residency training) in Paediatrics and Child Health where he trained to obtain the Fellowship degree of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in May 2011. He emerged as the overall best graduating student in the Faculty of Paediatrics and Child Health of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in the year 2011. In 2017, he won the abstract achievement award at the 59th American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual scientific meeting and exposition held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA during his Ph.D degree training. He recently obtained his Ph.D degree in medical sciences with focus on paediatric haematology and clinical pathology (pathologic basis of sickle cell disease) from the University of Campinas, Brazil in 2018. He has several publications in many reputable high impact international journals as well as some local journals.
