On behalf of our Specialists, staff, trainees, I want to welcome you to Department of Psychiatry, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital webpage. The mission of the department is to provide efficient and effective mental health care to the citizens of the State and environs, provide a conducive and excellent environment for teaching & training, and research by adhering to values of integrity, excellence and innovation.

There was a dearth of mental health service prior to 2008.The Federal Medical Centre, Ido-Ekiti, established in 2002, was the only tertiary institution that provided mental health services asides the limited mental health services offered by the State Specialist Hospital in Ado-Ekiti which had no psychiatrist in its employment.  There were only few psychiatric nurses, working with a Principal Medical Officer, in the employment of the state Hospital Management Board. Mental health services were limited to a couple of side-rooms on the medical wards within the state specialist hospital located in the state capital Ado-Ekiti. However, mental health services began to gain a lift in 2008 when the pre-existing State Specialist Hospital was upgraded to the status of a teaching hospital. Consultant psychiatrists and psychiatric resident doctors were employed. In the last quarter of 2008, a modest building complex was completed to   accommodate the Psychiatry Department of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.

On moving to the new facilities for the department, more personnel were recruited to include more Consultant Psychiatrists, resident doctors, psychiatric nurses and clinical psychologists.  By the end of 2009, Department of Psychiatry in EKSUTH became well positioned to offer quality mental health services to Ekiti State and some of the neighbouring states. The department gained a provisional accreditation of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 2011. The first Head of the Department at inception was Dr. Sakeeb Lateef Imam; a Consultant psychiatrist who later left the service of the hospital in 2009. Subsequently, Dr. Adetunji Obadeji served as HOD between 2009 and 2014; Dr. Lateef Olutoyin Oluwole served 2014-2016; Dr. Mobolaji U. Dada served 2016- 2108. Again Dr. Obadeji has been saddled with the leadership of the department, the position he occupied since 2018 till date. The Chief Nursing Officers who had served include Mr. Ogundumi MF; Mrs. Agbaje JF; Mr. Omotoba JT; and currentlythe nursing unit of the department is being headed by Mr. Ajiboye JK – a Chief Nursing Officer.

The department runs 24hourly emergency services, in-patient care as well as two specialist clinics (Tuesdays and Thursdays) a week. Besides, the department provides addiction care services and consultation-liaison services to other departments in the hospital. The department has been in partnership with sundry governmental and non-governmental organization in raising awareness in matters of mental health concerns. Personnel in the department have been variously engaged in public media and community mental health services.
