Department Overview
The Department of Community Medicine at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, was created in 2009.
The pioneer Head of Department was Prof James O. Bamidele (2009-2015). The subsequent HODs were Dr Olusola O. Odu (2015-2017), Dr Eyitope O. Amu (2017-2019), Dr Samson A. Deji (2019-2021), Prof Olusola O. Odu (2021-2023), Dr Samson A. Deji (2023-2024) and Prof Eyitope O. Amu who is the current HOD (from September 2024)
The Department presently has eight (8) Consultants Public Health Physicians viz: Prof James O. Bamidele, Prof Olusola O. Odu, Prof Eyitope O. Amu, Dr Samson A. Deji, Dr Oluremi O. Solomon, Dr Paul O. Ajayi and Dr Mojoyinola Adeosun.
The Department plays a pivotal role in improving the health and well-being of the community through preventive care, health education, and public health interventions. It aims to reduce the burden of diseases and health disparities through the promotion of healthy lifestyles, early detection, prevention of diseases and rehabilitation of those who have come down with one disease condition or the other. It is also plays a pivotal role in the training of health care workers.
Mission
To promote community health by providing preventive, promotive and curative services, conducting Public Health research, and fostering partnerships to improve health outcomes in Ekiti State and its environ.
Vision
To be a leading Department in Public Health that advances disease prevention, improvement of health literacy, training of medical and allied health care workers in the field of Public Health and conducting innovative researches.
Key Objectives
The primary goals of the Department include:
Disease Prevention: To prevent the occurrence and spread of infectious and
non-communicable diseases through vaccination, health screening, and educational
campaigns.
Health Education: To empower communities with the knowledge to make informed health
decisions and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Health Promotion: To encourage preventive healthcare practices like vaccination,
regular check-ups, sanitation, nutrition, clinical consultations and treatment of
endemic/epidemic diseases.
Public Health Research: To conduct research that helps identify health needs and
trends in the community as well as effective interventions that meet these needs.
Organizational Structure
The Department is structured to effectively address preventive, promotive and curative public health needs. The Department has three (3) practice areas which include Community Medicine Department EKSUTH, Comprehensive Health Centre, Oke-Ila, Ado Ekiti (the urban practice area) and Comprehensive Health Centre Igbemo-Ekiti (the rural practice area).
Community Medicine Department, EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti
Staff Clinic: The Staff clinic is saddled with the following
responsibilities:
Pre-employment, periodic and special screenings on the members of staff of the
hospital and provision of preventive, promotive and curative health services for
them. It serves as an outpatient clinic to treat the members of staff for various
illnesses from where they are referred for specialist care when
necessary.
Infant/Child Welfare Clinic: The clinic is saddled with the responsibility of
providing promotive, preventive and curative services not only to children under one
year but also those above one year whose caregivers bring their younger ones for
immunization clinic.
Nutrition Clinic: This clinic provides nutritional
related promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services. Services
provided include nutrition education, food demonstration, treatment and
rehabilitation of those with nutrition related disorders.
Immunization Clinic: This clinic offers immunization services to children and also
adults clients who need special vaccines. The growth monitoring and immunization
clinics hold every day of the week.
Comprehensive Health Centre, Oke-Ila, Ado-Ekiti:
This is the urban practice area of the Department. This centre has facilities for
observation and admission of patients when necessary. It also provides the following
services:
Reproductive health services: This includes provision of antenatal care, delivery of
pregnancies with low risk, family planning information, education and communication
services, Adolescent friendly clinic, e.t.c
Immunization clinic
Nutrition clinic
General outpatient clinic, where various endemic diseases are attended to.
School Health Clinic.
Community Outreaches and other field activities
Comprehensive Health Centre, Igbemo-Ekiti
This serves as the rural practice area for the Department. This centre has
facilities for observation and admission of patients when necessary. It also
provides the following services:

pregnancies with low risk, family planning information, education and communication
services.

General outpatient clinic, where various endemic diseases are attended
