Ophthamology Department

Introduction

The department of Ophthalmology Ekiti state University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, has been in existence since the creation of Ekiti State from old Ondo State in October 1996. At the onset it was operating within a room at the extreme of the old Maternity Ward following the vacation of the maternity unit to their new building.

The government of Ekiti State led by Engineer Segun Oni entered into a memorandum of understanding with Cuban Government to build an ultra-modern fully equipped eye centre for the state in November 2007.

Consequently the technical group from Cuba arrived the state on 7th of April 2008 and restructured the newly the then newly built Accident and Emergency building to a suitable Ophthalmology Centre. The Centre was opened for delivery of eye care on Monday 4th of January 2010.The Centre is a full fledged eye hospital with general ophthalmology and subspecialty clinics, in areas of Ophthalmic Plastic, Cataract, Glaucoma and Retina. Furthermore, there are two refraction units and a pharmacy outlet. There are presently four general clinic days and 3 subspecialty clinics (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and two surgical days (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Emergencies and ward patients are seen every day.

The Centre also has 2 operating theatres, with complete sterilizing units pre-operating and post operating rooms and a male and female ward. The wards have facility for intensive care. We now have a dedicated ophthalmic ward. Also, there are 2-satellite buildings attached to the Centre, which are the electro medical gases to theatre and wards, and also repair and maintain the Eye equipment.

Objective and goal:

The objective of the eye Centre is to provide qualitative eye care to the indigenes of the state and the entire country. The expected National patronage is based on the fact that all modern hitech and sophisticated equipment that will aid proper diagnosis and adequate management of eye diseases and disorders has been installed In the Centre. The ultimate goal of the Centre is not only to become a centre of excellence but a well-recognized institution of research and training.

There are 3 consultant ophthalmologists, 5 senior registrars and 1 registrar, 3 optometrists and 5 ophthalmic nurses in the department.
